10 Foods that fight pain

Chronic pain can really deter you from doing even your routine activities. Anyone who suffers from any kind of chronic pain can surely tell you how difficult it is sometimes to get up from the bed in the morning because back or knee or neck has 'pins' in it.
Yes...it's difficult to take the first step in the morning when you have a spur in your heel. But one has to live with it and beyond it.
We have, after talking to dieticians and nutritionists come with 10 fit foods for pain fighting. Just include these in your diet and see the difference.

Whole grains
Whole grains are rich in fiber, therefore filling. Once you have a stomach full, you are not inclined to eat wrong stuff and you manage your weight. Also, whole grains are a good source of magnesium, a mineral that has been shown in animal studies to short-circuit muscle pain. Include ragi, bajra, jowar puffs in your snacks. Have mixed atta for your rotis. You can even soak the grains, even wheat, overnight and have a chatpata snack adding onion, tomato and masala to steamed grains.

Ginger
We are blessed with the best spices in India. Use them. Ginger is the best pain killer having analgesic properties like the popular ibuprofen. It contains a quartet, gingerols, paradols, shogaols, and zingerone which are active ingredients to reduce pain. Drink ginger tea in monsoons and winter to get relief from that recurring pain.

Turmeric
Another popular Indian spice is turmeric. Also a ginger family member, it's powder is used in all vegetables and curries. It contains curcumin that helps nip pain

Olive oil
Olive oil is like liquid gold or elixir when it comes to fighting pain. It is rich in antioxidant polyphenols that help reduce common pain-causing mechanism in the body. Olive oil is also a good substitute for butter, which is high in saturated fat, that erodes bone strength and trigger pain. But use it carefully as it has 120 calories per tablespoon.

Salmon and mackerel
Not so easily available in India, but most restaurants now serve salmon. It is rich in pain-busting omega-3 fatty acids and a great source of another pain fighter: vitamin D. Other fish rich in omega 3 is mackerel, but it is harmful for people having uric acid problems. So it's best to stick to salmon.

Nuts
Almonds, walnuts are great source of omega 3 fatty acids and anti oxidants that help in pain control. Add these nuts to your salad or just munch on a handful as an afternoon snack.

Strawberries
Strawberries are full of vitamin C, an antioxidant with powerful pain-reducing properties, according to research. Some studies suggest vitamin C may help people experience less pain after breaking a bone or having orthopedic surgery.

Greens
Greens like spinach, amaranth, fenufreek leaves, argula not only have high iron content, but are horders of Vitamin K that helps maintain strong bones and healthy joints. A study shows that older adults with ample blood levels of K were less likely to develop osteoarthritis, compared to a low-in-K control group. However, Vitamin K also helps with blood clotting, so if you're taking blood thinners, check with your doc before boosting your K intake.

Dairy
You might not believe, but dairy products like yogurt and cheese can help reduce pain. They contain two bone-building nutrients - calcium and vitamin D. Vitamin D can diminish chronic pain according to research findings.

Glass of wine
Resveratrol in wine, grapes, and grape juice can often have an analgesic effect similar to aspirin, according to a handful of studies. Experts, in any case, recommend one daily glass of wine for women. Men can get away with one more. But, remember not to go overboard as wine's alcohol content can be dangerous. You can get resveratrol also by eating red grapes or sipping grape juice.

Bipasha Basu turns 'Lady Gunda'

So far, Bipasha Basu has, more popularly, been known as a sex symbol. However, of late, she has acquired a new title, Lady Gunda, during the shoot of her new horror film.

A source associated with the unit tells us that director Suparn Verma came up with this nickname for the Bong bombshell seeing her tomboyish stunts and naughty nature. Interestingly, he was in for a shock when Bips revealed that she was called a 'gundi' during her school days. "Suparn was surprised when Bipasha recalled how even the boys senior to her in school would be wary of her, lest she play a scary prank on them," says a source, adding that now it's the crew members who are careful, oblivious of who would be the target of her pranks on the sets.

Tight clothes affects sperm count!

The changing lifestyle has hit male infertility in Indore too.

City-based andrologist and infertility surgeon Kapil Kocha says on an average, 15% couples face infertility problem.
Earlier, males accounted for 20% infertility cases, but now the percentage has risen to around 50%.
He attributed the growing infertility among males to the perils of modern lifestyle like addiction to smoking, alcohol, drugs, excessive exercise, sona bath, steam bath, tight clothes, environmental impacts and mobile radiation.
Too much heat generated by tight clothes can lower sperm count. Tight clothing and underwear that keep testicles closer to body heat in theory may affect sperm count.
However, Kochar pointed out, growing awareness on this issue is also contributing to rise in reported cases.
"Earlier, males considered infertility akin to impotency and treated it as a taboo, fearing social stigma. Things have changed a lot now," said Kochar.

These days, males not only from urban but also from orthodox rural background approach for tests for infertility, he added.
On an average, 150 males visit his clinic monthly, said Kochar. Such patients could be treated in 60 to 65% cases.
The trends in the city confirm the prevailing global trends, which report a drastic qualitative decline in semen over the period from 1938 to 1991. Total 61 studies have been undertaken in this period for assessing changes in sperm quality.
Sperm density fell from 113 million to 66 million in this period. Sperm volume also came down from average 3.4 ml to 2.75 ml in the same period, said Kochar.
Qualitative decline in sperm leads to complexities like abortion and miscarriage apart from infertility.

Sharad slams Time’s ‘Underachiver’ remark on Manmohan

Editor's Note- We usually don't carry politically news but we appreciate what JD(U) chief said today and were compelled to put it in our blog -Jai Hind

New Delhi: - Janata Dal (United) Chief Sharad Yadav has slammed Time Magazine’s remark on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh which had dubbed him as 'underachiever' today.
Yadav, while defending Singh, said that the foreign based magazines are here for business and know nothing about India, and are trying to claw India again as East India Company (EIC) did years ago.
79-year-old Singh is featured on the cover of Time magazine's Asia edition, which will be out by next week. With his portrait in the background, the title on the cover reads 'The Underachiever - India needs a reboot'.
Singh, who has long been lauded for his pivotal role in liberalizing the Indian economy, has been dubbed as an ‘underachiever’ by a top US magazine which says that he appears to be unwilling to stick his neck out on reforms that will put the country back on growth path.
Pointing towards Singh's fall from grace, the magazine said, "In the past three years, the calm confidence Singh once radiated has been absent. He seems unable to control his Ministers and his new, temporary portfolio at the Finance Ministry notwithstanding unwilling to stick his neck out on reforms that will continue the process of liberalization he helped start."

Teacher in coma for 10 months starts CRYING after he hears fiancee's voice on phone held to his ear

A teacher who has been in a coma for 10 months has shown the first signs of recovery - he began to cry on hearing his fiancee's voice on the telephone.
Mathew Taylor was critically injured after a horrific motorbike crash in Bali last July - and doctors warned his family that the 31-year-old might never regain consciousness.
He had met Anda Nurul, 27, when he moved to Indonesia to teach English in 2009, 18 months before the accident.
The pair got engaged, but then tragedy struck and Mr Taylor fractured his skull in the dramatic crash and had to have his eye socket reconstructed using a bone taken from his thigh.
Mr Taylor had no medical insurance, so his devastated family had to raise £100,000 for his treatment in Bali.

His father, Darrell Taylor, used £50,000 of his savings to pay for the treatment while his stepfather Simon Moore remortgaged his house to find the other half.
Mr Taylor was transferred to the Royal Derby Hospital, close to his parents' home in Overseal, Derbyshire last October.
His family has kept a bedside vigil ever since, but Bali-born Anda - whose full name is Handayani - was only granted a three-month visa to be with her fiance after his local MP appealed to the Home Office.

The 27-year-old, who studies Dutch Literature at the University of Indonesia, was forced to move back home and leave her unconscious fiance behind after her visa ran out.

But after an agonising wait, Mr Taylor finally showed signs of life three weeks ago - after his family held the telephone to his ear so Ms Nurul could speak to him.
His mother Heather and stepfather Mr Moore were speechless with shock when he moved his hand towards the phone and tears began streaming down his face.
Mr Moore said: 'Heather calls Anda while we are with Mathew and as soon as he hears her voice he lifts his hand for the phone.

'He listens to her and you can see this change in him. He had tears in his eyes as he held the phone to his ear. She asked him something and he said a silent yes.
'Then tears were coming down his face. It was brilliant.'
Now, Mr Taylor is making a slow but steady recovery, and the family hope he will eventually be ready for the wedding of his dreams.
'He's really come on the past three weeks,' said Mr Moore.

'He is still in a low awareness coma but he moves his hand left and right when the phone rings.

'We are so pleased he is recovering.

'We spend most of our days at hospital and some days are good and others bad but we take what we can get. We are just happy he is responding.'
Luke Griggs, spokesman for brain injury charity Headway, said today that Mr Taylor could well make a full recovery.
'Coma arousal programmes are often used to try to stimulate patients who are in reduced states of consciousness, such as a coma or a persistent vegetative state,' he said.

These carefully planned periods of stimulation - in the form of sound, touch, smell and taste - are combined with periods of complete rest in order not to overload the person's senses. 'While each individual case is different, in general terms the longer a person remains in a state of reduced consciousness, the less likely they are to make a full recovery.
'We have heard of several examples of people waking from comas and going on to make good recoveries and live happy, fulfilled lives.
'The amount and type of information a person can process while in a reduced state of consciousness will vary from case to case and accurately diagnosing someone's level of consciousness is notoriously difficult.
'However, examples like this demonstrate that coma arousal - or stimulation - programmes may well be effective.'

Mysterious pulse on earth created by last month's solar flare seemed to answer Sun's Blast

  • Neutron monitors around world 'lit up' despite relatively small size of flare
  • First time in six years flare affected Earth like this
  • Data being analysed by satellite which scans particles invisible to others

After an unusually long quiet period, the sun unleashed a solar flare on May 17 this year - but scientists are now puzzling over what happened on Earth.
Neutron monitors all round the world lit up in response to the blast for the first time in six years, despite the fact it was an M-Class, or moderate, flare.
The 'answering' pulse shouldn't have happened at all. Now scientists are trying to unravel what happened - and why our planet 'pulsed' in response.

James Ryan, an astrophysicist at the UNH Space Science Center said, ‘This solar flare was most unimpressive and the associated CME was only slightly more energetic. And looking at it optically, it was remarkably dim, it was, all things considered, a ninety-eight pound weakling of solar events.'
Scientists are now analysing the data using a satellite which scans an range of bizarre particles invisible to other spacecraft - PAMELA, a European spacecraft dedicated to watching rays from space.

The most recent event will allow the study of the evolution of the flare from low to high energies without interruption.
‘The PAMELA satellite provides us with a bridge that has never existed before,’ says Ryan, ‘a bridge between solar energetic particles measured by other spacecraft and those made on the ground by neutron monitors, like the one we’ve operated here in Durham for decades. Spanning that gap has opened up new opportunities.’
